We have a few internship openings for Mental Health Counseling and Creative Arts Therapy interns throughout the five boroughs of New York City, working with different populations and in various settings. We hope this guide will help you get a sense of our internship opportunities so that your choices can be ranked in the application. Below you will see a list of all openings. About the Program: Children and Family Treatment and Support Services (CFTSS) Programs offer a range of services for children with mental health needs and their families. Services include therapy, skill-building, and family support. The goal is to improve the mental health and well-being of children and families.
About the Opportunity: Intern will have the opportunity to work with individuals and families in the community. Student must be bilingual Spanish speaking and comfortable making home visits. Student will accompany clients to appointments, court, and other services as needed. Student will also be expected to shadow for case management services as well.

Personalized Recovery Oriented Services (PROS)
Opportunity Name: Social Work Intern in Bronx

About the Program: Personalized Recovery Oriented Services (PROS) programs offer comprehensive rehabilitation and support services for individuals with serious mental illness. Services include therapy, vocational training, and life skills development. The goal is to help individuals achieve their personal recovery goals.
About the Opportunity: Interns will be expected to be on site 21 hours/week to work with clients in individual and group sessions. Interns will carry a caseload of 7 clients that they will see weekly for individual sessions. They will run 2-3 groups, including a group off site at a school. Students must be able to complete documentation in a timely manner, which can be time consuming. Good time management skills needed. Fieldwork will be supervised at first but then students will be expected to run groups independently.
Key Essential Functions:
- Individual counseling (caseload of 7 interns, 15-minute sessions each)
- 2-3 groups/week
- Field work to schools to run group

Holland Ave Children's Community Residence
Opportunity Name: Mental Health Counseling Intern

About the Program: Children’s Community Residences offer residential care for children with emotional and behavioral challenges. Services include therapy, education support, and life skills training. The goal is to provide a stable and supportive environment for children to thrive.
About the Opportunity: Interns in this role will work within a children’s residence, carrying a caseload and being a clinical support in addition to the residence staff. Interns will see youth individually as well as run groups. Interns will be expected to meet with youth regularly, lead activities, and generally check in on the welfare of their clients in the residence.

Staten Island Preventive – Trauma Systems Therapy
Opportunity Name: Social Work Intern in Staten Island

About the Program: Trauma Systems Therapy (TST) Preventive Programs offer therapy for children and families affected by trauma. Services include counseling, skill-building, and family support. The goal is to help families heal from trauma and build resilience.
About the Opportunity: Interns will be placed in a preventive program using the Trauma Systems Therapy (TST) model. Interns will be trained in this model over a 3-day period. Interns will be working primarily in clients’ homes and must be comfortable with eventually going to the homes independently. Interns must be flexible and understand that clients are often in need of case management services, as well as (or before) being ready for clinical TST services. Interns will carry a caseload of 3-4 clients/families and will be expected to see clients on a weekly basis. Students must be available 1 evening per week until 8pm. Students may be offered an opportunity to work part of the time remotely.
Key Essential Functions:
- Home visits
- Individual and family counseling for 3-4 clients
- Use TST model with clients
- Case management services as needed
- Attend training in TST model
- Crisis assessments
Requirements for this Opportunity:
- 2nd year MSW students required
- Must be available a minimum of 14 hours/week; 21 hours/week preferred
- Must be comfortable with making home visits to clients’ homes
- Comfortable with engaging clients who may be deemed as high risk due to suicidal ideation, domestic violence, and history of abuse/current ACS involvement

Loss and Bereavement
Opportunity Name: Art Therapy Intern in Manhattan

About the Program: The Children’s Loss & Bereavement Program provides support for children who have experienced loss or bereavement. Services include counseling, support groups, and educational resources. The goal is to help children cope with grief and build resilience.
About the Opportunity: Interns at this program will be 2nd year Art Therapy graduate students. Student will be assigned to a school where they will run a group. Travel time to the school is included in the placement hours. Students will be expected to work with clients who may be deemed high risk, including advocacy, intake risk assessment, group assessment, and referral to individual counseling. Students will shadow staff for the first month and will then be expected to run groups autonomously. This internship is hybrid and students are expected to check in with supervisors on remote days and remain available for communication regularly throughout the day.
Key Essential Functions:
- Travel to designated school (will count toward placement hours)
- Run group
- 30-minute phone consultation after group
- Follow up with clients
- Send group reminders
- May run virtual group(s)
- Provide weekly recap for families
- Attend peer supervision
Requirements for this Opportunity:
- 2nd year Art Therapy graduate student required
- 1 evening per week until 6:30pm (either Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays)
- Spanish helpful but not required
- Field work required to schools
